Dangars Falls ~ Blue Mountain Creek  back

Sections Three To Nine. All along the  River  To Blue Mountain Creek.

  • Section 1. Dangars Falls ~  Mihi Salisbury Track Junction

  • An easy walk through woodland of about 1 ˝ hours, to the junction of tracks to Mihi Falls or Salisbury Waters.

  • Section 2.  Mihi Salisbury Track Junction to MihiCreek

  • This section takes about an hour down to Salisbury/Mihi Junction, and involves a steep descent and a bit of a scramble. From there you can return to Dangars Falls Carpark, continue on up the Mihi (see Salisbury Exit Mihi), or on down Salisbury Waters for 2- 5+ days.

  • Section 3. MihiCreek to Salisbury Gara Junction

  •   This 2-hour section involves fairly slow creek walking with many crossings and wet feet. The Macleay River officially begins at the Gara. You can head up to a prearranged pickup at the Blue Hole (another day), or continue on down the Macleay.

  • Section 4. Gara Junction ~ Macleay Camp 093

  • . A tricky little 1-2 hours section, via a couple of loops of the Macleay and a couple of beautiful pools and campsites. At the end you can continue down the Macleay, or head up to Blue Nobby Mountain across private property to a prearranged pickup (see reverse of Section 11. BluNobMtn to MACLCMP923).

  • Section 5 Macleay Camp 093 ~ Heart Base

  • The river is now opening up, but there’s still a couple of wet-foot crossings. You pass the only real clump of cedars on the upper Macleay, before reaching the Heart of New England- a double loop in the river (about 2 hours). From here, you can head up the Heart (advised - section 07 Up the Heart), or follow the Macleay around the loops section 06.

  • Section 6 Around the Heart

  • This section is about 2 hours, with lovely campsites before the river narrows down, and you’ll have to be ready to float your carefully sealed pack across a couple of deep pools.

  • Section 7 Up the Heart

  • A scramble up a gully to the base of the Heart, then an exhilarating walk up a knife-edge ridge with views up and down the Macleay and up to Blue Nobby. Then either rejoin the Macleay via Section 08, or head up via a long steep ridge to a prearranged pickup at Blue Nobby (see 12. Heart up to Blue Nobby Summit)

  • Section 8 Heart ~ Macleay Camp 965

  • . Once you are past the Heart, you’ll start to see some evidence of white settlement – a set of yards, a 4WD track- along this section. At AGD 965.020, you can take a long even ridge out to Blue Nobby (see the loop walk from Blue Nobby Mountain BNMHeart+SReturn, or just the photoguide 13. MACL965020 toBlueNobby )

  • Section 9 Macleay Camp 965 ~ Blue Mountain Creek

  • . It’s about 18 kilometres of easy walking and perhaps fewer river crossings to Blue Mountain Creek. From here, you can head up to the Winterbourne section and perhaps come out at Wallamarra, not far from Blue Nobby Mountain, or on for 3 days to Georges Junction and the Kempsey Road, where you can meet with canoes and paddle days to the ocean...
